The temple of Sveti Ignatii Starozagorski is the last temple to be built in the city.
The temple of Sveti Ignatii Starozagorski bears the name of the saint, born in Stara Zagora, who is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on October 8. Saint Ignatii lived at the end of 18th century and the beginning of 19th century. His legacy is a true feat; he was ready to give his life instead of renounce his faith.
Saint Ignatii, whose real name was Ivan, was born in a family, which valued education and he developed an interest for monastic living early on. He fled the country following the brutal murder of his father and the forceful conversion to Islam of his sisters and his mother. He was threatened by Turks upon his return to Bulgaria and was forced to convert as well.
Repenting his deed, Saint Ignatii renounced Islam publicly and accepted his death as a martyr.
The bells of the Saint Ignatii Starozagorski Temple resound beautifully and the young painter Milena Rashkova created its magnificent icons.
